It’s almost Halloween! The days are getting cooler, the first batches of cider are fermenting, and if you are like us, there are apples everywhere.
It’s no surprise that caramel apples are a quintessential Halloween snack. It’s the perfect time of year to combine the fresh seasonal bounty with so much sugary goodness. While we support the inevitable overindulgence in mini candy, here is a more grownup take on a traditional fall treat.
Caramel Apple Cider Cocktail
Although I tend to prefer my apple juice fermented, it seems a pity to not make use of all the delicious fresh juice that is around in the fall. This cocktail uses both cider and fresh juice (a.k.a. both hard and sweet cider). This helps ensure you still get a nice fresh apple flavour and aroma that is synonymous with the season. The hint of rum helps deepen the flavour and bring out some of the caramel without an overpowering sweetness (so you can have another mini chocolate bar…).
Caramel Apple Cocktail
- 1 oz Fresh Apple Juice (AKA "Sweet Cider")
- 1/2 oz Caramel Liqueur
- 1/4 oz Dark Rum
- 4 oz Cider
Combine fresh juice, caramel liqueuer, and dark rum and shake with ice to combine.
Pour mixture over ice into rocks glass.
Top with cider and garnish with apple wedge.
You could use any cider in this cocktail but I recommend something with a nice bright acidity to help balance the sweetness of the liqueur. I chose this Maverick cider made with granny smith and braeburn apples and it worked wonderfully.
