In November, we stopped into Elite Brewing & Cidery in Calgary on our way home from a Prairie North work retreat in the mountains. What better way to end a weekend talking about cider than with… a flight of cider!
A few of the breweries in Calgary are making cider but usually only one at a time. We were very excited to be able to have a full flight of cider at a brewery in Alberta!
Elite is military themed throughout their branding and taproom, while maintaining a space that is bright, airy, and modern and nowhere near “kitchy”. We stopped in mid-afternoon on a Sunday and the space was filled with young hip families with their babies, people playing board games, and people enjoying dates and snacks. Totally a place we would want to hang out.
Our Flight at Elite Brewing & Cidery
USS Kittyhawk Extra Dry Cider
As the first cider we tried, we were pleasantly surprised with the dryness! The server told us that people keep asking for extra dryness in their ciders; as craft cider fans, we are so happy to hear that and see Elite deliver.
Tomcat Hopped Dry Cider
This cider was sweeter, but had a nice balance of the nice hop aroma. This one might be a good choice for somebody that is more accustomed to beer or doesn’t like their cider really dry.
Peaches of Normandy Cider
I love the name of this cider; very witty and on brand. The flavour reminded me of the canned peaches I took in my lunch as a kid. This one was a bit sweet for me, but that sweetness did add to that childhood fruit cup nostalgia.
This was the stand out cider for our whole group. It was delicious and very unique – in all our cider travels, I don’t think we have had anything similar! It was sweet with hints of spice. It tasted very seasonal like you could even drink it warm by the fire apres-ski. The colour is absolutely beautiful.
