All of our cidermaking to this point has been with locally foraged fruit or from our mini urban orchard, but the time has come for us to expand! Today we planted a tree nursery with hardy dwarf apple rootstock (Vee 3 if you’re nerdy enough to know what that means).
We ordered from Prairie Tech Propagation. The online ordering process was super easy and they have a great selection of prairie hardy plants.
The mosquitos were insane and the weather was so hot, that it was hard to believe that we need such hardy rootstock.
After a little bit of prep work, we planted! We also fenced it in (moose are a problem that the fence might not solve…) and added some other plants for a permaculture guild.
We have great Orchard Supervisors in the form of my little cousin and their cat.
We are so excited to welcome all these future cider apple trees to the family.
We don’t have a permanent orchard at this point and are still working on borrowed land. But we are crazy enough to dream big and hope that we can pull it off!
